Author: Wang, Tong INSEAD Area: Decision SciencesPublisher: Fontainebleau : INSEAD, 2008.Language: EnglishDescription: 89 p. ; 30 cm.Type of document: INSEAD ThesisThesis Note: For the degree of Ph.D. in management, INSEAD, June 2008Bibliography/Index: Includes bibliographical referencesAbstract: Advances in information technology equip managers with more information to support decisions, and help them implement policies with a higher degree of flexibility. Making better use of information and flexibility becomes increasingly important to success in operations management. In this dissertation I focus on the role of information and flexibility in Supply Chain Management. I study three different but closely related supply chain problems, and each of them involves a component related to demand information and a component related to operational flexibility. The first part is about inventory management with advance demand information and flexible delivery. The firm obtains demand information from customers' advance orders and is able to flexibly prioritizing order delivery. The second part is concerned with how a newsvendor who dynamically acquires market demand information can flexibly order from multiple sources with different cost and leadtime combinations. The third part focuses on the role of information and flexibility in competitive situations. In all the three parts I intend to better understand: (1) the impact of information and flexibility on operational policies and tactics, (2) how and by how much information and flexibility generate value, (3) their strategic impact on supply chain efficiency and incentives, and, most importantly, (4) how different types of information and flexibility interacts.
