Problems, knowledge, solutions: solving complex problems - a response to Enid Mumford's paper ICIS 1998, Helsinki, Finland

Author: Galliers, Robert D. INSEAD Area: Technology and Operations ManagementIn: Journal of Strategic Information Systems, vol. 7, 1998 Language: FrenchDescription: p. 271-274.Type of document: INSEAD ArticleNote: Please ask us for this itemAbstract: In reflecting on Enid's paper, I have been thinking of two things, one serious, the other somewhat flippant. First, the more serious comment. What I have always respected about Enid's work is the fact that she makes us think, and brings an ethical dimension to our discourses, whether it is the need for an emanicipatory, inclusive dimension to systems design, improving the working environment of secretaries or, in this case, drawing our attention to complex, pervasive and worrying problems against which societies, across the globe, appear defenceless. My purpose in this response, is to reflect on and reinforce Enid's messages, and then attempts to draw some initial, tentative conclusions as to what theses messages mean for the Information Systems community
