The 1990 International Manufacturing Futures Survey shows that this vision is quite different among manufacturing executives of large successful firms based in Europe, America and Japan. The factories of the future envisioned for these three regions of the world are different not only in terms of what they are designed to do, but also in terms of the key tasks required to create them. Japanese companies are in the process of creating a design factory of the future, one which can make fast design changes and provide a variety of products individualised for each customer. American manufacturers are building a value factory of the future emphasising the creation of responsive organizations that can produce quality goods at a reasonable price. Europeans are most heavily focused on building the borderless factory of the future.
