The Transformation of the European financial services industry: from fragmentation to integration

Author: Hawawini, Gabriel ; Rajendra, EricINSEAD Area: Finance Series: Working Paper ; 90/04/FIN/EPS Publisher: Fontainebleau : INSEAD, 1990.Language: EnglishDescription: 82 p.Type of document: INSEAD Working Paper Online Access: Click here Abstract: This paper is an attempt to study the long, complex and irreversible process of change that is unfolding across European financial markets. Divided in three sections, the first one tries to synthesise the evolving structures and dynamics of the EEC's financial sector and to evaluate the effects of various factors of change on European users and providers of financial products and services. The examination focuses on the two most vital sub-sectors of activity from a borrower and investor standpoint: banking and securities markets, incorporating elements that affect investment management and touching upon the increasing "assimilation" of European insurance industry into a universal financial services conglomerate. The second and third sections cover two major topics: a synthesis of the current structure and dynamics of the banking and securities markets sub-sector and an examination of the aims and implications of the main EEC directives that concern each sub-sector
