Author: Kets de Vries, Manfred F. R. INSEAD Area: Organisational Behaviour In: L' Individu dans l'organisation : les dimensions oubliées - Chanlat, Jean-Francois - 1990 - Book Language: FrenchDescription: p. 297-310.Type of document: INSEAD ChapterNote: Please ask the Library for this chapter.Abstract: In reviewing management textbooks, the construct of envy, which plays a major role as motivator, seems to be nonexistent. In this chapter, the meaning, origin, and function of envy is explored. Particular attention is paid to ways of dealing with envy -patterns of action which combine envy avoidance and envy-inducing components in an intricate way. Among the alternative strategies discussed are idealisation, denial, reaction formation, rationalization, withdrawal, devaluation, the drive to excel, and reparation. It is demonstrated how envy turns into a significant motivator when seen in the context of organizational life.
