Assigning students to sections: a multicriteria decision support system approach

Author: Jelassi, Tawfik ; Weitz, Rob R.INSEAD Area: Technology and Operations ManagementIn: Decision Sciences, vol. 23, no. 1, May/June 1992 Language: EnglishDescription: p. 746-757.Type of document: INSEAD ArticleNote: Please ask the Library for this articleAbstract: MCADSS is a multicriteria allocation decision support system for assisting in the task of allocating students to groups. Based upon multiple criteria, MCADSS's goal is to maximise the diversity of members within groups, while minimising the average differences between groups. The project may be viewed from several perspectives: as a multicriteria decision making problem, as a"reverse" clustering problem, or as a personnel assignment problem. The system is currently being used to allocate MBA students into sections and study teams at INSEAD. This paper describes the rationale for MCADSS, design criteria, system methodology, and application results. It also suggests how the approach outlined here might be used for further applications
