Membership, seniority and wage setting in democratic labour unions

Author: Burda, Michael C. INSEAD Area: Economics and Political ScienceIn: Economica, vol. 57, November 1990 Language: EnglishDescription: p. 455-466.Type of document: INSEAD ArticleNote: Please ask the Library for this articleAbstract: The dynamic behaviour of a democratic monopoly labour union that allocates employment on a length-of-service basis is studied. In the context of a simple model, it is shown that a median voter equilibrium can exist in a union consisting of seniority-ranked workers when voting membership depends on past employment. The closed-form wage rule of such a union induces a unit root in the autoregressive representation of employment even if the underlying determinants of labour demand are strictly stationary. The study shows that, "Cheshire Cat" or disappearing union phenomena are on the other hand, likely to be limited by the forward-looking behaviour of union members and the sensitivity of union membership to employment
