Four decades of debate on operational research" p.289-304Abstract: Operational research is a discipline concerned with real life problems and with people dealing with these problems and it is characterised by an analytical way of looking at things. This can create problems as too much amphasis on mathematical techniques may hamper the effectiveness of OR to human decision makers working in real organisations. Good practice means appropriate analytical skills as well as the employment of skills of teamwork and facilitation. OR at Work contains 5 cases where decision makers face difficult problems in complex situations. Descriptions of successful practice give students as well as potential users a clear picture of what OR is about and how OR projects are conducted. Interviews with successful OR practitioners and their clients are included, complementing the case descriptions. Application areas studied include transport and logistics, product and process design, maintenance and financial services, as well as healthcare and environmental decision making
