Resource recombinations in the firm: knowledge structures and the potential for schumpeterian innovation

Author: Rodan, Simon ; Galunic, D. CharlesINSEAD Area: Organisational Behaviour Series: Working Paper ; 96/75/OB Publisher: Fontainebleau : INSEAD, 1996.Language: EnglishDescription: 31 p.Type of document: INSEAD Working Paper Online Access: Click here Abstract: Schumpetarian innovation rests on the ability to imagine and realize novel combinations of firms resources and capabilities. Firms are envisioned as owning stocks of varied resources that are clustered in distrinct competencies. Although the resource-based view literature has exposed the importance of these capabilities to firm performance, their treatment is largely in the singular and their interaction and recombination requires exploration. Building on the resource-based view of the firm (RBV), the notion of creative resource recombination is explored and a theory of innovation based on resource recombinations is advanced.
